Jonathan Littell returns with a novel of a hangman in an imagined Central Europe
The author of "Les Bienveillantes," winner of the 2006 Prix Goncourt, publishes "L'Héritage," following a brother and sister crushed by an authoritarian, mafia-like state.
Jonathan Littell has a new novel out, "L'Héritage," built around an executioner in an unnamed, imagined country of Central Europe, according to Le Monde.
Littell won the Prix Goncourt in 2006 for "Les Bienveillantes." His new book, described by Le Monde as troubling, follows a brother and sister whose lives are each broken, in different ways, by a state that is both authoritarian and run like a mafia.
Le Monde calls it a novel without illusions, though the paper's summary gives no further detail on plot, length or publisher.
