Roberto Saviano on his new mafia novel — and on being overtaken by another kind of fear
The Italian writer, who has lived under police escort for two decades after exposing the Camorra, publishes a novel of love set inside the 'Ndrangheta. He says the public conversation about danger has moved on from organised crime to migrants.

Roberto Saviano has a new novel out, a tragic love story set within the 'Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia, according to El País. The Italian writer, who became internationally known after Gomorra exposed the Camorra's grip on Naples, has lived under police protection for twenty years as a result.
"Nunca imaginé que llegaría a la edad que tengo ahora. Estaba convencido de que me matarían antes," Saviano told El País — he never imagined reaching the age he is now, certain he would be killed first.
In the same interview he turned to how public anxiety about crime has shifted. "La mafia ya no importa, ahora el problema de seguridad son los inmigrantes, es increíble," he said — the mafia no longer matters, he argues, now the security problem that dominates debate is immigrants, which he calls remarkable.
No publisher, title in French, or publication date for the novel is given in the available material.
