A New French Translation Brings Henry James's "The Bostonians" Back Into Print
Télérama highlights a fresh rendering by Jean Pavans of James's 1886 satire of Boston reform circles, with a plot turning on a rivalry over a young activist.

Henry James's 1886 novel "The Bostonians" is being reissued in French under the title "Les Bostoniennes," in a new translation by Jean Pavans, according to Télérama.
The book, set in late-nineteenth-century Boston, follows the feminist activist Olive and her cousin Basil as they both become drawn to a younger woman newly committed to the cause, a triangle that Télérama describes as the engine of James's satire on reform-minded America of the 1870s.
Télérama calls Pavans's translation a success, presenting the reissue as an occasion to revisit one of the American master's classics.
